What is PageRank?

Updated: Jun 21, 2023

PageRank is the name of the algorithm that Google's founders made. It lets you rank or score a webpage on the search list from 1 to 10 based on things like how relevant it is, how good it is, and how reliable the site is.

At the time, the PageRank algorithm was a big change in how people looked for information on the internet. It also helped Google quickly become the most important search engine in the world, beating out all of its rivals.

Also, Google's formula has not stayed the same; it has been changing over time to become more complex. Today, it is thought to be one of the best search engines ever made.

How does Google PageRank work?

Even though it would be hard to explain how this method works in detail, it is enough to understand how it works in general. PageRank is based on how important a site is, which is measured by how many and how good its Backlinks are. This means that a page's PageRank score goes up the more and better links it has on other sites.

But today, there are a lot of other things that help decide where a website ranks on the SERP.

What is link building, and how does it change PageRank?

Link building is a way to boost your site's organic ranking by getting as many high-quality links from reliable sites as possible.

There are a few ways to build links:

  • Linking between pages on the same site, like between blog posts.

  • Putting links on social media posts.

  • Doing Guest writing.

  • Getting news coverage or interviews on specialty sites.

  • Joining groups or making comments on news and other content in the niche.

It is important that incoming links come from high-quality, reliable sites. If a website has a lot of backlinks from pages that are considered Spam, like a generic database, its PageRank score could drop by a lot.

What does PageRank have to do with SEO?

Building links is now seen as an important part of any off-page SEO plan. But it is only one of many things that need to be done to help a website get a good ranking.

The search engine also gives a lot of weight to on-page SEO, which includes things like the quality of the content, the choice of keywords, and how easy it is to navigate. All of these things are part of an algorithm that gets more complicated every day and that only Google experts know perfectly.

How can we find out a site's PageRank?

PageRank has been known since the beginning and for a long time. But in 2016, Google chose to take away the option to know it, because it seemed that sites could use "Black Hat" techniques to boost their scores if they knew it.

This doesn't mean that Google has gotten rid of the formula, though. It's still one of the things it uses to decide how to rank search results. No one can say exactly what those factors are, and they change and improve too often for anyone to know what they are. What we all know is what the best SEO tactics are in general.
