The major difference between Universal Analytics (UA) and Google Analytics 4 (GA4) lies in their underlying data models and approach to tracking and reporting user behavior.
1. Data Model:
UA: Universal Analytics uses a session-based data model. It focuses on tracking interactions within a session, which is a period of user activity on a website, typically ending after 30 minutes of inactivity or at midnight.
GA4: Google Analytics 4 utilizes an event-based data model. It places a stronger emphasis on tracking individual user interactions as discrete events, allowing for more granular analysis of user behavior across sessions

UA: Universal Analytics relies primarily on cookies to track user behavior and attribution. It tracks user sessions and assign unique identifiers (Client IDs) to users.
GA4: Google Analytics 4 leverages a combination of cookies and a more privacy-centric method called "Measurement ID" to track users. It can also utilize the App+Web property, which enables cross-platform tracking of user interactions across websites and mobile apps.
3. Reporting and Analysis:
UA: Universal Analytics offers a wide range of pre-defined reports and dimensions. It focuses on pageviews, sessions, and goals as the primary metrics. Customization and analysis options often require additional configuration and implementation.
GA4: Google Analytics 4 introduces a more flexible and exploratory approach to reporting. It provides a flexible analysis hub that allows users to create custom reports, analyze user paths, and perform cohort analysis more easily. It emphasizes the use of event parameters and custom dimensions for deeper data analysis.
4. Machine Learning and Insights:
UA: Universal Analytics has limited built-in machine learning capabilities. Users need to rely on external tools or custom implementations to leverage advanced machine learning techniques.
GA4: Google Analytics 4 incorporates enhanced machine learning capabilities, such as automated insights and predictive metrics. It provides more out-of-the-box AI-driven features for uncovering trends, predicting user behavior, and generating insights.
It's important to note that GA4 is designed as the future of Google Analytics and is recommended for new implementations, while Universal Analytics is still widely used and supported.
